Year 8 Music - The Incredibles
Section outline
-
In this unit we are learning about and applying music elements to notate, compose and perform music.
Topic 1:
Timbre & Dynamics
Topic 2:
We build on our knowledge of Topic 1 elements to add Tempo and Duration (which we use to make Rhythm)
Topic 3:
We build on our knowledge of Topics 1 & 2 to add Pitch (which we use to make Melody)
Topic 4:
We think of all the Music Elements as a whole to analyse music and create our composition.
-
Rhythm includes the Music Elements of Tempo and Duration and is one of the most important components of your composition assignment so we will be doing lots of Rhythm activities in Topic 2.
You will be thinking about how long notes (or rests) are and need to know how to notate them. Most of you are familiar with playing these on your instrument but you might like to use this list for the rhythm activities this week and to notate your composition assignment.
You will have assistance with all these activities when we do them in class but you can also practice them at home to build your skills and hopefully make a composition with a fun and catchy rhythm.

*If you have misplaced your hard copy of this worksheet you can reprint it from here.
Listen again to the How To Notate Rhythm video to help you fill in this worksheet.
Keep this sheet as a reference for how to write your rhythm for your composition.
-
Pitch refers to how high or low the notes are. You need to understand and experiment with melody for your composition assignment so we will be taking a closer look at this important feature through the activities in Topic 2.
You will have assistance with all these activities when we do them in class but please enjoy listening and experimenting with them at home, too.
*IMPORTANT: You must post your creation using Song Maker to the forum by 6 June for feedback. Then you can start notating your composition.
-
Post the link for your composition here.

MUSIC ELEMENT
HOW I USED THIS ELEMENT TO CREATE MOVIE MUSIC
Pitch
Rhythm
Dynamics
Form/Structure
Timbre (instrumentation)
Now we are going to use our skills in reading and hearing music to analyse some movie themes. The movie themes will serve as inspiration for your composition assignment:
- Which instruments (timbre) will suit the theme you want to create?
- Where will your composition have volume changes (dynamics)?
- What sort of rhythms and patterns will it use (duration)?
- Will there be a lot of repeated notes or will the melody move around (pitch)?
- How many bars are the sections? Are any sections repeated later in the piece (form)?
After we have done our analysing you will be ready to finalise your composition assignment.
